When you become an EMT, or Emergency Medical Technician, you become a trained first responder. You will assist people during very scary times in their lives. As an EMT you will work closely with other agencies such as firefighters and police officers.

There are many different situations that require the help of an EMT. A lot of people just think about the big emergencies like a car accident or a house fire. EMT’s get called to minor injuries as well. EMT’s will also respond when firefighters are paged out. This includes gas leaks, fire alarms and car accidents among other things.

To get started you need to have a few basic requirements

· You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

· Be in good overall health

· Be at least 18 years old

· Have good eyesight

· Have a valid driver’s license

If you meet all the basic requirements; look for an EMT program to enroll in. There will be a lot of work and you must pass an EMT test. There is a lot of information to learn. Due to the nature of your job, no two calls will ever be the same. Usually you don’t know what type of injuries you will be dealing with until you arrive. As well as the general requirements you will want to make sure you are ready for the stresses of being an EMT. Not only are some of the calls unpleasant but many EMT’s work long hours and odd schedules. Being an EMT is hard work but very rewarding.

Making sure you find a good course to enroll in is important. Many local colleges and technical schools will offer EMT basic programs. Studying hard in order to pass your national EMT test is important. You can’t work as an EMT unless you pass your EMT testing. To help you prepare for the EMT test there are a lot of resources available.

After you pass your EMT basic test you can star applying for jobs. Some departments will administer their own written test as well as a practical exam. Staying up to date on information is important. You will continue to train and learn well into your career.
